Roosevelt High School

Penn Street

Inkster, Michigan

Roosevelt High School officially opened in September of 1945 with 4 grades - 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th. The 7th graders became the class of '51, 8th graders became class of '50, 9th graders - '49 and 10th graders - class of '48.

The first graduating class was the class of '48 with 18 graduates. The next classes were; '49 with 55 grads, '50 with 47 grads and 51 with 66 grads.

Construction of an addition to Roosevelt began in summer of 1950, and included a cafeteria, two gyms, band room, new commercial department, library and many classrooms. It was completed in September of 1951.

The last class to graduate from Roosevelt was in June of 1960.

The new high school, named for our superintendent, Hamilton J. Robichaud, opened in January 1961. Roosevelt became a junior high school and in September 1971 was renamed in honor of a local businessman, Lafayette Allen Jr.

The junior high classes were moved over to Robichaud in September 1992 and so the school sat empty for about a year.

In January 1993, Roosevelt was demolished by the wrecking crew. If you drive by Beech-Daly and Penn today, you will see no trace of our dear ol' Roosevelt High but its memories will live in our hearts.
